Insert Napoleon Dynamite Sigh Here

Just a quick observation:

When I write about stuff I care about, like the Right of Return or Spinning Wheels, no one feels the need to weigh in.

And yet when I write about what is - in my opinion - something that doesn't even matter at all (cough sports cough) - my blog suddenly becomes very popular for a day or two.

By this logic, if I want my blog to become wildly popular I need to start writing about things that I think are boring or uninteresting. I created a list of possible topics for your enjoyment:
Spongebob Squarepants
Belly Button Lint
Toenail Hygiene
Baking Soda and Possible Military Applications
The Life Story of My Kitchen Table
The Color Gray
Golf
Dirt: A History
Sloth Racing
Spatulas
Split End Awareness
101 Things To Do With Cold Oatmeal
A Story About The Time I Went On A Walk And Nothing Exciting Happened At All

I think I'll start sometime next week with the Sloth Racing post. Apparently it's a real thing. Sort of.  When I Googled it, I found this YouTube video:

  1. i've noticed the same thing on my blog, but I think (or at least I'm giving the human race the benefit of the doubt) that when I write stuff that truly matters to me people can tell what those subjects are and rather than possibly offend me with some opinionated comment they would much rather leave it be and comment on some dumb little project I finished. But I imagine you could actually turn some of those subjects listed into quite entertaining posts.

  2. And I was so excited to see real sloths race. Another Napoleon Dynamite sigh.

  3. If it's any consolation, I don't think it's the fact that it's boring to you--it's that you are wrote very passionately about the subject, and the things you said were somewhat controversial (I guess a lot of people really like sports). Maybe there aren't as many spinning wheel enthusiasts out there? And if there were, people tend to post lengthy comments more about things they don't agree with than things they do. (And you don't tend to find many people hating on spinning wheels...)

I am passionate about politics and the Middle East, but I know how ignorant I am and wouldn't dream of taking you on if I disagreed :).

  4. Beth, I have limited knowledge of the middle east and spinning, and I trust your knowledge and opinions on these topics.

In interest of expanding participation on your blog, though, I will tell you of a related experience I had while at BYU.

There was a Palestinian girl in one of my computer science classes. She was obviously very angry regarding the whole Israel thing. ("Thing" is about as confident as I am in my knowledge.) She insisted insistently that each Jewish resident of Israel was given a million dollars from the Israeli government. I don't remember where she thought all that money came from, though.

I saw a spinning wheel on a Japanese kids cartoon yesterday. I don't know if it was correctly drawn, though.

  5. Of course, by commenting on this blog post we are reinforcing the trend of posting only on stuff you don't care about, Beth. Doh.

  6. I'm interested in hearing more about things to do with cold oatmeal. My kids always ask for oatmeal and then eat 3 bites, leaving the rest in the bowl to congeal.

Also I find myself using information you share in your "important to me" posts in real life. As in "I was just reading my friends blog about..."

I do so love comments. They make me feel important.
