Cloth Diapering - Day Four

We are at the end of the fourth day using exclusively cloth diapers. I've had a couple of poops to deal with, but it hasn't been that bad. With only eight total diapers, I do have to wash them every day, and that is a little bit of a hassle. If I decide I like cloth overall, though, (and I am leaning in that direction) I'm going to buy more and that won't be as much of a problem.

I decided to give cloth another try because I was becoming alarmed with how many diapers The Squeaker was going through every day. We are dabbling with potty training because he has been asking to be changed so much more often - today we went through six diapers when a couple months ago we would have gotten by with only three - but I think we still have a long way to go. He is in size five diapers, and it turns out that size fives and also pull-ups cost a lot more than the other sizes. I added up the number of diapers he has gone through since we began our experiment on Thursday, and it was a substantial number. I pulled out a stack of our disposables to show The Husband and showed him how many disposables we have saved from the dumpster just in the last four days. It is a tall stack.

  1. My Mom did cloth diapers, and I couldn't stand the smell. I suppose she didn't wash the diapers every day either. She would just rinse them out and put them in a diaper pail to let them marinate for about a week or so until she was ready to wash them. Yummy.

  2. Jay - They have made some amazing technological advances in the world of cloth diapering in the last 20 years. They have special wet bags that do an excellent job of containing the smell. Fuzzibunz and BumGenius diapers are all-in-one so you don't have to use a separate cover or use pins. And if you still want to do the prefold/ cover thing, they have these neat little things called snappis that keep them closed. These ain't your mama's diapers.

So far we are experiencing less smell with the cloth than we did with the disposables. (So far)

  3. I'm from the Philippines and most people there still uses cloth diapers...When I had my baby a year ago, I was meaning to try cloth diapering to save money. But it seems like babies poop and pee almost every minute..I couldn't even tell! I can't do all the washing and tending the baby and do all household chores anymore. I ended up buying diapers...but I made sure its an off-brand and somehow it didn't hurt that much on our budget. :)
